A six-year-old girl presented with abdominal pain for a day and fever for 3 days. Pain developed over right lower quadrant and ultrasonography showed an appendicular mass. Appendicular mass was removed on surgery and sent to pathology.

- Trichuris trichiura – Image a and b showing adult worm sections with thicker, short posterior end with uterus containing ova and fragments of the slender, whip-like anterior end, and Image c shows barrel shaped ova with thick shells and clear, mucoid “plugs” at each end
- Location in Host: Large intestine, cecum, and appendix
- Treatment of choice: Albendazole 400 mg for 3 days or Mebendazole 100 mg twice daily for 3 days
- Complications
- Trichuris dysentery syndrome – usually seen in children with high worm burden leading to diarrhoea, tenesmus, iron deficiency anaemia, and poor growth
- Colitis, malabsorption, fat soluble vitamin deficiencies
- Rectal prolapse
